Military Life, Calamari Inkantation
Marina grew up in the militaristic octarian society--a prodigy, she entered the training program at six and had graduated by nine, after which she helped to design and improve weapons. Intelligent and hard-working, she put her all into her military engineering work, knowing no other life (and potentially being somewhat brainwashed, though it's unclear to what degree a standard octarian is brainwashed and to what degree they're simply raised into their lives). It wasn't until she was exposed to the song Calamari Inkantation, which is known to have mysterious powers, that she realized her life wasn't what she wanted to be, and she went AWOL, traveling to Inkopolis, where the squidlike inklings live. Even though she no longer wants anything to do with the octarian military, this is the origin of her love of machinery and skill with them and computers.
Meeting Pearl
When Marina reached the surface and Inkopolis, she had a few issues to deal with: she didn't know the inkling language, she didn't know much about inkling culture, and she didn't have anyone to help her out with this. She quickly met the inkling named Pearl, though, and Pearl was more than willing to help Marina out, teaching her the language and telling her about inkling society without once asking about Marina's past or species. Marina quickly grew quite fond of Pearl, and respects her a lot as someone who's done so much for her. Pearl is definitely her best friend, and though they do tease each other from time to time, there's no one Marina trusts more.
Off The Hook
Interested in composing, remixing, and singing, it was Marina who came to Pearl with the idea of forming a band. Putting her hard work to a different use than weaponry, she'd even already created a demo of what would eventually be one of their hit songs. Combining Marina's singing and composing with Pearl's writing and rapping, they climbed the charts and eventually got a job with Inkopolis News. Marina works as hard as she always has, working on her music and even helping build stages for the splatfests she announces on the news. Being in Off the Hook is a much healthier way for Marina to work hard and put her brain to work than her former military life, and it's clear that she loves it and working with Pearl in general.
Octo Expansion
Marina and Pearl both end up accidentally involved in the exploits of Agent 8, an amnesiac octarian stuck deep underground. They communicate with Agent 8 and Captain Cuttlefish via walkie-talkie, providing moral support, money, and, in Marina's case, hacking skills. Marina spends her time trying to break into the computer system to figure out how to get Agent 8 and Captain Cuttlefish out. She's even capable of tricking the computer system into thinking Agent 8 has completed a task that they haven't (aka the "skip this level" mechanism). Better at building things than hacking, she's unable to go toe-to-toe with the evil AI running the place... But she does quickly come up with a plan to stop said AI from using a giant human statue (...Splatoon is weird) from destroying the world. She tells Agent 8 to activate the hyperbombs she's made on the statue, then asks Pearl to use her voice to combat the weakened statue via a Killer Wail weapon. While staying back and acting in a supporting role, without her skills and quick-thinking, Inkopolis would have gotten totally covered in ground-up octopus (Splatoon is really weird).
During these events, Pearl, Marina, and Captain Cuttlefish communicated with each other via a chatroom. It's here that Marina's past came out explicitly to Pearl, who saw an entire file on her former life. Pearl immediately defended Marina and said that she always knew Marina was different but didn't really want to make a big deal out of it. Pearl's support and insistence that everyone in Inkopolis loves Marina helped Marina to gain confidence in her place in the world, as well as see an optimistic future for the other octarians who were now coming to Inkopolis.
» FIT: Marina is familiar with technology, even if it's not exactly this kind, and loves working with it. She's good at building things, with a history in (ink-based) weapons, and she's also a competent hacker. While her fighting experience is based on shooting ink at other ink creatures, she does know how to handle weapons. The atmosphere is definitely going to unsettle her, but she's clever and capable of adaptation. There's nothing more fun than pushing a character to their limits, anyway.
» POWERS: Marina has three hearts and no bones (but one beak in her mouth). Like a real-world octopus, she can change her color--in this case, her ink color. Her default is a blue-green color, but she can change it to whatever she wants. It typically shows on the tips of her tentacles, her fingers, and her toes, though she can change her whole tentacles too (but not all of her skin). Marina is a being made mostly of ink, being able to turn from her normal humanoid form into an octopus form. With ink-based weapons, she can fire her ink and, in the octopus form, swim through it at faster speeds than she can run. By inking a wall, she could swim up it, though she can't manage going upside down, so a lipped surface couldn't be climbed like this. Additionally, ink doesn't stick to all surfaces--things like glass and saran wrap make ink pretty useless. The ink doesn't really have much of an effect on creatures who aren't also ink-based, but it is biodegradable! While in her octopus form, she's basically entirely made of ink, so she can travel through things like grates. Technically, she's also capable of releasing a burst of ink from her octopus-form strong enough to propel her great distances through the air, but that's not especially useful in an enclosed space. If you would like to see an educational video on Marina's ink powers, with squids standing in for octupi, you can click here.
This isn't a power, but actually a weakness of her form: because she's made of ink, water is lethal to her. She can withstand the equivalent of a bit of rain, but any more and she dissolves.
If any of this is too much, I'm fine with removing any or all of it!
» NOTES: I'd like Marina to stay in her canon form! It's usually humanoid...
